About the Conference

Beyond the Bottom Line: Defending the Human Connection in Health Care

Join us in creating a system grounded in human connection, excellent care, and sound science.

Uniting clinical care & community activism

The Lown Conference is:

Informative: We bring together global leaders in primary care, evidence-based medicine, shared decision making, patient safety, palliative care, and other fields to share research, innovations, and other lessons they’ve learned about what it takes to provide the right care

Inspiring: Past attendees have said that our conference reminds them why they went into medicine. We aim to remind our attendees of the humanistic values of caring and community that ought to be the motivation behind all medical care. We also know that working within the modern medical system can be isolating and lead to burnout. Our conference is an opportunity to connect with other people who see the problems in the medical system. Through those connections, we’re building a community of clinicians, patients, and others who are working to get to the right care.

Collaborative & Inclusive: This is not just a conference for physicians! We are always working to bring in more nurses and other health professionals, as well as students and trainees in the health professions, in order to give all our attendees the benefit of hearing from a wide range of perspectives and experiences. We invite patients, community and religious leaders, academics, and other non clinicians, both as speakers and attendees, because we know that right care isn’t just about what happens inside the hospital or the clinic – it’s about choices that we make as a community and a society.

Action-oriented: We want to give you tools you can use tomorrow, whether that’s for changing the system through your clinical practice or for building the right care movement through organizing and public advocacy.

The Lown Institute

The Lown Institute is a think tank dedicated to research and public communication to expose the deep-rooted failures and injustices in our health care system, and to helping clinicians, patients, and communities develop a shared vision for a better health system.

Since 2012, the Lown Institute has been a leading voice in the movement to recognize the harms of overuse of medical care, and in pointing out the clear connection between wasteful medical treatment and our system’s failure to deliver needed care.

The Right Care Alliance

The Right Care Alliance is a grassroots movement, bringing together diverse voices from both inside and outside the health system to create public pressure for change. We are building a network of activist patients, community members, and health professionals, because only by working together do we have the power to create a just and equitable health system that is accountable to all Americans.
